The estranged son of a patrician family forsakes his blue collar life to return home and by a bizarre turn of events is wrongfully accused of his father's murder. Young Corbet St. James (Bruce Greenwood) reluctantly decides to attend the commemoration of a new art museum built by his father (Rip Torn) in memory of his adored younger brother, David, a fighter pilot who was killed in Vietnam.

Enroute to the dedication, St. James comes to the aid of Tricia (Corinne Bohrer), an attractive young woman whose trucker husband has abandoned her on the road and stolen her truck. After recovering the truck, St. James finally arrives at his family's estate, where his misgivings prove true when he and his father clash in a painful duel of wills. The commemoration begins, but is interrupted when Tricia drives up in her truck asking for St. James' help rescuing her young daughter who is being held hostage by her husband in exchange for the truck.

While attempting to help Tricia straighten out her life, St. James learns that his father has been brutally killed. In shock, he races back to his home where he is instantly arrested for the murder. Although her testimony may prevent Tricia from reuniting with her daughter, she comes forward to clear St. James. Distraught and confused, St. James embarks on a search for his father's murderer.
